Lot No 40 Cask Strength 55%

August 31, 2017

Dark fruits, searing spices, dark rye bread with pleasing bitter notes, sweet oak caramels, sesame oil, hints of wild flowers, a thread of vanilla and slightly pulling tannins that tie it all together. ★★★★★

Almost from the day that Lot No. 40 was first released, Canadian whisky lovers have been asking for a cask strength version. Finally, the team at Corby has caved, releasing this 12 year old 100% rye edition at 55%.

The raw rye spirit was distilled twice, first in a short column still, then in a copper pot which concentrates the rye spices and pleasant yeast characters to give a big flavourful bang on the palate. Ageing in new oak barrels provides counterpoint to the spicy rye by adding oak caramels, vanilla and slightly pulling tannins.

The instant you pour it huge, dark, plummy fruit notes erupt from the glass. These dissolve into canned pears, dark rye bread, halva and an almost oily graininess – sesame seeds perhaps.

The palate is huge, very spicy and sweet with a generous hit of bitter rye. The fruity notes become fresher but more generic and way in the background are the wafting fragrance of wild flowers.

The oiliness returns along with an almost briny feel and a brisk peppery burn. Oak caramels are present throughout but they do not seem overly sweet. A generous dollop of water reveals more rye bread notes, floral tones and and hard slatey rye. The finish is long, long, long with a pleasant glow.

This whisky is one of the 2017 Rare Releases of the Northern Border Collection.

★★★★★ Very highly recommended.

$69.95 at LCBO. Price subject to verification when it is released in October 2017.

Wow Davin…my mind is officially blown! Between this and the Wiser 35 I can only think this is a truly golden age for Canadian whisky.
Please tell me L40 Cask will be a general release in Canada.
    Thanks for the head’s up!

  2. it seems like Canada is creating their own Octoberfest!

    • Toronto Tim:

On second thought, at 60 $CAD one has WIld Turkey Barrel proof, Makers Mark C.S, Knob Creek C.S … so, 55-60$ is bet for LCBO to list…

Any update of when available @ LCBO stores in Oct. 2017?

    Will there be a U. S. A. release?

    • Davin:

Oct 9 in Canada, later in the US, but yes, this year.

  6. Just wanted to encourage all Canadians to get out and pick up this whisky right away. I am in Alberta and I thought I was checking regularly enough in my local stores. They went from, “it’s coming next week” to, “oh, sorry we sold out” so fast! I am still looking around the Edmonton area. It seems that some may yet be getting it, while others have run out! I can’t wait to try, their regular release is a house staple.

Jonathan – it’s at the Wine & Beyond in Windermere…just bought two bottles this week (one last weekend and a second for a friend in Texas who can’t wait to get this, and a CC 40 year old I bought, in his cabinet and then glass). $70.

  7. toronto tim:

Best buy of the Northern Border Collection, but Wiser35 will run a close second… harder to get in Toronto now …

  8. WOW…. I really Love the Lot.40…I didn’t expect such a different elixr as this!(cask lot.40)… Bravo Doc L. – this is a Very complex whisky— One that deserves discerning—something that i plan on doing with my 6 bottles- (for now)..And the Rye is really the star of this one.. (although quite different from the original–But in a good way if that’s possible).. The peppery Rye has such depth of character—And on my Hit List..until gone

  9. Toronto Tim:

Dear Dr. Don L., i am now requesting the release of 15 year-old Lot 40 CS u have in stock … for Xmas 2018 …

  10. Matt:

I’ve sampled all of the Nothern Border collection now and I will let my purchasing pattern be my review:
    Pike Creek: 1 bottle
    G&W: 1 bottle
    Wiser 35: 2 bottles (lovely)
Lot 40 CS: FIVE bottles (one will be a gift). I’ve been into Whisky for 10 years and this is in my top 3 EVER.

About a week ago a whole new lot hit LCBO shelves. Check the LCBO website. Most of the stock in GTA is gone, but London area has several stores showing stock. If a store shows one, odds are it is reserved, but you may get lucky (my last bottle was a case where someone ordered a bottle so the store brought in 2). In the last few times I’ve looked they where not on the shelves with the other NBC’s, make sure you ask a staff member. Also, the website says limit one per customer, but I have found the store staff are not aware and will sell more than one (did this with 2 Lot 40′s and the 2 Wisers).

    Happy Hunting!

    • Favian:

So i found the way to get around the ‘limit one per customer’ is by placing separate online orders for the same product.

  11. neandrewthal:

Ok Don, when do we get Lot 40 forty year old at 80%?

  12. Eric:

Hey all I’m looking to grab a bottle of this. Shoot me an email if you have one available. Thanks so Much!

    • Eric:

      Im in London Ontario

  13. Herb:

There are 10 bottles of lot 40 CS in Charlottown PEI, get a friend from there to pick one up and get it later, mail it or whatever if you really want one
