Looking Good Made Easy

This just in from Chip Dykstra, my Rum Howler friend in Edmonton. I don’t know how Chip manages to publish 2 or 3 new spirits reviews a week, but he does. And now it seems he is expanding his horizons with a column in a new lifestyle magazine called flave. And as if this isn’t enough, he still finds time for a chuckle or two in between! But hey, lets have Chip tell us about it and his new cover boy campaign in his own words:

Put the Rum Howler on the Cover!
A canadianwhisky.org guest post from Edmonton’s Rum Howlin’ Arctic Wolf.

In 6 to 8 weeks a new internet magazine is going to launch called ‘flave‘. It’s kind of a “user manual for being a guy” magazine. Or maybe it’s more of a “the best way to waste your time” kind of magazine. I think they are still kind of figuring that out. Now normally, I do not go out of my way to promote magazine launches, but in this case (because I have been asked to be a contributing writer) it’s in my self-interest to do a little promoting. We are still working out the details, as I have insisted that I will not contribute if my independence is compromised. I will write what I want, when I want, without regard for who their sponsors may be.

Of course, the magazine has no idea that I plan to begin an immediate campaign to put myself on the cover of the first issue. (They want a nice picture of a sexy Helen Anahita instead.) So to make my case I have arranged to have a ‘mocked up’ first ever flave magazine cover made (pictured above) with yours truly on the cover.

If you are with me on this, then send in your subscription request with a demand to put me on the cover. (I guess if you want the sexy Helen Anahita instead you can just send in the normal subscription request.)

The Magazine will be free to all who sign up at flave.ca.

If you want the Rum Howler on the cover, just send them an email (promo@flave.ca) with the subject line:

Put the Rum Howler on the Cover!

Cheers Everyone!

“I don’t know how Chip manages to publish 2 or 3 new spirits reviews a week”

It helps to get free bottles from suppliers/distributors on a regular basis. ;-)

Follow-up the freebies with write-ups (publicity), and a gig in the business won’t be far behind. Good on him for monetizing it though.

  2. Chip, I can’t believe they’d put Helen Anahita on the cover instead of you, what are they thinking?

Oh, well, I hope your project goes forward successfully. I’ll watch for it!

Doug’s a good guy with an excellent website. I don’t mind if he comments here instead of on my site. I have guest posted on Rum Connection in the past and I think people kind of get used to talking to me where ever they find the posting.

And as a note to Portwood:

A lot of writers get free stuff; I am just very pedantic about letting the people who read my reviews know when I receive a bottle from industry. I think this is the honest way to handle things.

      Hi Chip,

Doug is most welcome here, as are you. Yes I had a look at his site; my comment was just to let others know about it. You’re right – it’s a good read.
